Art by Michael Epton
I wanted to tell you a little bit about who I am, what I do, and how I work. Don't worry, this won't be long and it won't be in art-speak...
My work - I'm mad about it! I live my life in colours and sketches, my eye is always searching for the next piece of inspiration... seriously, I have the attention span of a gnat because I'm usually being distracted by an interesting structure or shapes or colours... At the moment I'm exploring lots of new techniques, I recently developed a new way of working, squeezing paint straight from the tube onto canvas to create a style perfect for one of my recent collections 'skyscrapers'. When I paint, I like to paint big, with bold colours in acrylic, I guess some of my paintings could be described as 'naive' or verging into impressionism/expressionism territory. This is especially apparent in my recent 'boats' collection. Please, check them out and let me know what you think!
Exhibitions - I exhibit quite regularly in and outside of London. Most recent exhibitions were at a Warehouse in East London, The Bee Hive in Brixton, State of the Art Gallery in Portobello Road, IQ in Boston and my own production downstairs at the Centro Gallego. Alongside these evenings I also exhibit at fairs such as today at Beale Park.
A bit about my background - I was born in Boston, Lincolnshire. It's a small fenland town, a good place to grow up but not great for someone easily bored. The countryside there is flat with huge skies... pretty amazing. So there isn't much to do, but there is plenty of character in the people that live there. It is still home to me. After many years drawing and painting for pleasure, I got myself to art school in Scarborough at De Montford University.
Scarborough is a good place to gather yourself - wild seas in winter and a lot of places to walk... hell of a lot of inspiration! I got to a point where I felt I'd learned what I needed at uni, and packed myself up and away to the 'bright lights' of London.
So that was 6 years ago and here I am, now in Kensal Green, a fantastic community in a city with a vibrant art scene. I combine working on my art with working at the BBC building and lighting shows.
So, that is a potted history of me and my work! Please take the time to look around my site www.michaelepton.com and enjoy my art. As I said before, I like to experiment with new techniques, so I love to meet with other artists; please feel free to contact me for any projects and collaborations. If you are interested in buying art and my paintings I am available for unique commissions, or you can buy any of my 'off the peg' pieces online or by contacting me.
